Basic information

Chemical properties: Colorless to pale yellow oily liquid, odorless, with strong hygroscopicity. It is miscible with water and ethanol, releasing a large amount of heat and splashing vigorously. It is advisable to gradually add the acid to the water. Exposed to the air, it rapidly absorbs moisture and can also seize water molecules from organic substances such as sugar, paper, cloth, and wood, causing them to carbonize. Anhydrous acid solidifies at 10℃, and 98% acid solidifies at 3℃. It decomposes into sulfur trioxide and water at 340℃. It may corrode metals. It is miscible with water and ethanol. pH 1.2(0.49g/L,H2O,25℃). Melting point: 3℃. Boiling point: 290℃/760mmHg. Density ρ(20) : 1.84g/mL.

Usage: A reagent widely used in analysis and laboratories, it can turn the analyzed substances into a soluble state. Precipitants for barium, strontium and lead; It can replace silicic acid and volatile acids. Used for dryers and melting point determinators; Moisture absorption in organic analysis and synthesis; Sulfonation reaction; Condensation reaction; It is used in nitrification reactions when mixed with nitric acid. 
